Cap-Aldi: Bringing a Rooftop Spectacle to Life
Shoppers doing their weekly shop were left stunned when Lewis Capaldi popped up on the roof of their local Aldi-rebranding the store "Cap-Aldi" with a giant cardboard 'Cap' taped to the sign before breaking into an impromptu gig. We at Beyond Real had the pleasure of embarking on this truly one-off live experiential collab, facilitating the technical production and content delivery that brought this rooftop show to life for shoppers and millions online.
The Mission: Technical Precision on a Supermarket Roof
We were approached to handle the live technical production, which required a high-stakes mix of: Live streaming directly to TikTok, Multi-cam 4K capture, ISO audio recording and Instant content deliverables for immediate social impact.
Our brand-new 4K Flypack was the secret sauce, supported by our world-class NDI and Dante fibre network. This modular infrastructure allowed us to handle last-minute requests and rapid changes with ease, ensuring the routing and capability were at an absolute premium. To ensure the "soaring vocals" of Capaldi's new single, "Something in the Heavens," reached global platforms without a hitch, our Technical Manager and network engineer optimised a complete remote connectivity package. We utilised: Multiple bonded connections, Starlink satellite arrays and Hardline backups. This created the premium up/down speeds necessary to broadcast the frenzy of the crowd as Lewis performed hits like "Survive" and the momentous "Someone You Loved."
Supermarket History in the Making
Through pre-production, we worked closely with our partners at Aldi to ensure every social integration performed perfectly. As Lewis himself joked: "This is Capaldi on the roof of an Aldi. Sorry to get in the way of anyone's shopping. I was back there earlier, some excellent produce, brioche buns, carrots - the lot."
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, noted that the moment felt "written in the stars."
For us, it was about ensuring the "safety nets" were in place so that the magic could happen. Whether it was the super early call time to go straight into an 8:00 AM live broadcast or the buzz of the crowd realising their grocery run had turned into a once-in-a-lifetime gig, the energy was electric. Aldi customers came for groceries and left with goosebumps; we're just proud to have provided the platform that made it all possible. What a way to celebrate Lewis's triumphant return to the stage!
